Teaching young kids about culture. The country is Iceland.

My daughter chose the continent of Europe as our focus continent for the month of September. She picked the continent out on her toy puzzle globe.

Week 8: Belgium
Week 9: Croatia
Week 10: Iceland
Week 11: Sweden

Week 10 we studied Iceland. I start off the week by reading the country sheet filled of simple facts and information about the country. I keep it simple because my daughters are young. They are currently five and one and will be turning six and two in November therefore I keep the country lessons simple. The whole point is to expose my daughters to other languages and cultures as a way to give them an open mind and raise them to someday be understanding and respectful adults.

The idea is to do a brief language lesson Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays with my daughters. I found a few videos online to introduce my daughters to the Icelandic language although none of them were fun, easy to follow, and kid friendly therefore I don’t have any videos to suggest.

At the end of the week I give them several coloring pages with sentences appropriate for early readers in order to sneak in more reading time with my oldest daughter. For the week of Iceland I made four coloring pages to share with my daughters.
